02 · FAQ
The questions an overlander actually asks.
Answers from the Kuafo team — drawn from pre-purchase conversations with overlanders, SUV owners and outfitters across four continents.
-
01 How does the inflation actually work — and what if the pump dies on a trip?
Every Kuafo ships with a 12 V DC electric inflator that connects to the vehicle's cigarette lighter. Press one button and the four TPU-coated arches inflate to 12 kPa in roughly 90 seconds. The system holds pressure passively — a check valve on each beam traps the air. In cold weather or at altitude, you can top off in under 30 seconds at any time.
The kit includes a compact hand pump as standard backup. Two riders on three bikes can manually inflate the tent in about six minutes. We've also stress-tested the beams with deliberate micro-leaks: a single puncture bleeds slowly enough that you can finish your trip, repair it with the included TPU patch kit, and keep sleeping elevated.
-
02 What power source do I need? Can it run from a portable power station?
The pump draws about 8 A at 12 V — well within the output of any vehicle socket, and within the capability of common 300 Wh+ portable power stations (set the output to 12 V DC). On idle-battery vehicles we recommend the engine running during the 90-second cycle, or running the pump from a power station to keep the starter battery untouched.
The internal LED strip runs on the same 12 V and draws less than a phone charger, so leaving it on overnight for ambience is safe.

03 Which SUVs, 4x4s and roof racks is Kuafo compatible with?
Kuafo fits virtually any vehicle with a roof rated for ≥ 75 kg dynamic load and a pair of crossbars rated for ≥ 90 kg combined. In practice that covers late-model Toyota Land Cruiser, Prado, RAV4, Hilux; Ford Bronco, Everest, Ranger; Land Rover Defender and Discovery; Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee; Mitsubishi Pajero; Isuzu MU-X; and most factory or aftermarket crossbar kits from Rhino-Rack, Thule, Yakima, Front Runner and EGR.
For unusual setups — camper shells, tray-back utes, bare roof rails, light trucks — send us your vehicle's dynamic roof-rating label and a photo of the roof. Our team will confirm fitment in writing within 24 hours.
-
04 How does Kuafo perform in real rain, wind and cold?
The 5 000 mm waterhead fly and taped seams are the same spec used on expedition-grade ground tents. In field tests across the eastern Alps and Patagonia, Kuafo has weathered multi-day storms at 80 mm/h rainfall and Force 7 winds when all four guy lines are staked out.
In snow, brush snow off the fly periodically — any rooftop tent will accumulate load faster than a ground tent. The TPU beams stay flexible to −20 °C; below that, allow a five-minute warm-up with the engine running before inflation. In hot desert sun, the silver-coated fly drops interior temperatures noticeably versus single-wall tents we've measured against.
-
05 What does daily use actually look like — day 1, day 30, year 1?
Day 1: unbox, mount to crossbars with the included brackets, do a test inflation in your driveway. Day 2: arrive at camp, park, press one button, fold the ladder out — you're sleeping elevated. Day 30: setup has become a five-minute reflex. Year 1: rinse the canvas, dry it fully, treat the zippers with the included silicone spray. That's the entire maintenance cycle.
-
06 What does the warranty cover — and what does it not?
Covered: shell integrity, beam welds, zipper function, fabric seam failures, pump electronics — for three years on the structure and two years on fabrics and electrical components. Warranty is transferable between owners when the tent is sold privately.
Not covered: damage from over-rated dynamic loads, impacts, chemical exposure (fuel, solvent), unauthorised modifications, or force majeure events. Cosmetic wear — scratches on the powder-coat, minor fabric fading — is normal after hard use and is not a warranty event.
